Position Purpose:

• The essence of the Solution Designer role is the conversion of business requirements into a solution design that will becomemthe blueprint for a solution being created for TFR.
• The role is responsible for the development of the overall vision that underlies the projected solution and transforms that vision through execution into application solutions.
• Performs the necessary leadership, analysis and design tasks related to the development of a pragmatic solution design that solves the business challenges.

Position outputs:

• The role of the Solution Designer is to expand Transnet Freight Rail’s use of data, systems and application as a strategic
• enabler of company goals and objectives by engaging in Senior Management/Senior level business decision makers discussions related to business values and business processes.
• Advocate the principles of information technology strategies to development team leaders so that they accept the architectureand know how the pieces will fit together at a high level.
• Lead the identification and analysis of enterprise business drivers to derive useful business context and determine corresponding changes.
• Analyse enterprise business drivers to determine corresponding change requirements.
• Analyse the IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
• Conduct gap assessments between the current and future architectures within the IT environment by reviewing and analysing the current technology infrastructure and its ability to support strategic objectives of the customers, recognise critical system eficiencies and recommend solutions based on best practices and company needs & affordability.
• Lead analysis of technology industry and market trends to determine their potential impact on the current and future enterprise architecture. Analyse technology industry and market trends to determine their potential impact on the enterprise.

• Promote the architecture process, its outcome and on-going results to the organisation including the IT & business leaders to maintain cohesion between various parts of the design and encourage simplicity.

• Define the governing principles to guide solution decisions for enterprise architecture through leading and facilitating session with the relevant stakeholders to get ideas and buy-in. Define the principles to guide solution decisions for the enterprise.

• Conduct audits with regard to the implementation and compliance to the governing principles and standards of the IT solutions and address deviations where applicable. Design and direct the governance activities to ensure compliance.

• Design and lead the implementation of business requirements so that it conforms to IT strategies. Provide senior technical leadership to translation of the customer’s business requirements into technical specifications across a broad range of technology domains aligned to IT strategies.

• Develop a road map of the evolution of the enterprise application portfolio from current to future state into a cohesive and consistent by defining plans to upgrade, replace key applications and technology platforms, inclusive of business priorities, business impact, project plans, time line, risks and costs in collaboration with other stakeholders (e.g. business Executives, Project Sponsors).

• Coordinate solution design implementation and modification activities so that they conform to IT strategies.
• Facilitate the evaluation and selection of software product standards, as well as the design of standard software configurations to conform to the future state.

• Consult with application or infrastructure development projects to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture and identify when it is necessary to modify the solution design to accommodate project needs.

• Liaise with the business analyst in order to guide the development of the functional requirements within the constraints of the architecture.

• Work closely with the enterprise program management office (EPMO) to ensure alignment of plans with what is being delivered.

• Liaise with the project manager in order to provide estimation of effort and risk for construction of the feasible solution. Consult with project teams in order to provide estimation of effort and risk for construction of the feasible solution as well as to identify when it is necessary to modify the solution design to accommodate project needs.

• Review solution designs produced by the application developers and other specialists to ensure architectural compliance and enhance their understanding of the technical requirements. Liaise with developers in order to enhance their understanding of the solution and to capture any technical issues that can be avoided early on.

Qualifications & Experience:

• BSc degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Information Technology
• Project Management certification
• Five to seven years of experience in at least two IT disciplines in a client/server or service-oriented architecture (SOA) environment, including technical architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or operations.
