The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has officially opened applications for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2027 Intake. This is a great opportunity for young South Africans who want to gain military training, develop leadership skills, and build a structured career in national defence.
If you are between 18 and 22 years old and have completed Matric, the SANDF MSDS 2027 programme could be your pathway to professional growth and long-term career opportunities.
Applications are open from 16 February 2026 to 27 March 2026.
What Is the SANDF MSDS Programme?
The Military Skills Development System (MSDS) is a two-year contract programme offered by the SANDF.
Year 1:

Basic Military Training
-
Functional and specialised training in your chosen service division
Year 2:
-
Deployment to various SANDF units
-
Practical workplace exposure
-
Leadership and professional development
The programme allows recruits to gain hands-on experience while serving South Africa in a disciplined and structured environment.
SANDF MSDS 2027 Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the MSDS 2027 intake, you must:

Be a South African citizen (no dual citizenship)

Be between 18 – 22 years old (with Grade 12)

Be between 18 – 26 years old (with a 3-year tertiary qualification)
-
Have a minimum APS score of 18

Have Life Orientation (Level 4 minimum)

Have Mathematics and Physical Science for specialised fields such as Aviation or Engineering

Have no criminal record or pending cases
-
Be medically fit
-
Have no visible tattoos when wearing uniform

Be willing to undergo psychometric, medical and drug testing

Certified copy of South African ID

Certified copy of Matric certificate
(Statement of results for 2025 accepted) -
Certified copies of tertiary qualifications (if applicable)
